Ch. Pomeys Cru Bourgeois
Chateau Pomeys Bordeaux 2010 [75cl] France

Pomeys is a chateau on the rise, situated in Moulis which is a couple of kms away from Margaux. They make their wines in a modern style with the emphasis on ripe fruit and elegant new oak, but this also has lots of classic Bordeaux character. A lovely ripe nose of cassis, mocha, tobacco and cream leads you into the velvety palate which has plenty of fresh dark forest fruits, cedar and spice. Naturally there are tannins but these are fine grained and in harmony. The acidity is fresh and balanced, and as the wine opens up you get subtle nuances of vanilla, cigar, graphite and peppermint. A good length of flavour and a classy wine - if you paid £20-25 for this in a wine merchant, you'd be pretty pleased with it. Under £20, it's terrific value, especially given that you could easily lay this down for 7-10 years.

The result of an already legendary vintage year, this intensely garnet-hued wine with deep purple tints commands the senses with its rich bouquet covering a whole spectrum of fruit (cassis, cherry) and just a hint of toastiness. The highly elegant palate bespeaks perfectly ripened grapes and offers smooth, creamy extract over velvety tannin. A very great wine without a doubt among the wines of this Médoc village appellation.
