Altromerlot - Friuli Colli Orientali DOC SILVER MEDAL—AWC Vienna (A) (Vintage 2011)

This vintage represents the first step to re-gain the prestigious position which placed, in the past, the Altromerlot, among the best red wines of Italy.

In 1987 a new idea was born amidst the vineyards of Torre Rosazza: why not produce a wine that was very different from those generated by the Friuli tradition? L’Altromerlot was created thanks to this idea and it is probably the first wine from Friuli to undergo a long refinement process in French oak barriques. It is known as ‘L’altro’ or ‘the other’ as it was different than other wines present at the time. Twenty vintages later, L’Altromerlot has become a symbol of indisputable elegance. It continues to be called ‘the other’ to emphasize the careful attention paid to this special wine that goes from the vineyard to your table without interruptions or compromise. The grapes are rigorously harvested by hand and selected plant by plant. Next, they are de-stemmed and placed in steel wine-making vats at controlled temperatures where the musts and the skins remain in con-tact for 8/10 days. Complete malolactic fermentation is then carried out, followed a by long refining process in Allier durmast barriques which lasts for at least 24 months. This ruby-red wine is intense and lively. The nose will recognize the delicate perfume of small red berries and blueberry, followed by hints of musk and forest brush. The mouth will immediately delight in the wine’s noble lineage—elegance is its most evident characteristic. Its softness engulfs the palate, recalling red fruit preserves that evolve, giving off a discrete hint of wood. Expect a long finish.
