Santa Gloria Carmenere
Santa Gloria Carmenere 2014 [75cl] Chile Intense violet colour and an open, frank nose of plum compote, pepper and mint. A rich, silky wash of blackcurrant, green pepper and star anise. Full bodied and powerful, with fresh acidity and deliciously-sweet tannins. Pair with Chilean favourite 'pastel de choclo' (corn and meat pie) or tacos. Chile’s flagship grape, Carménère virtually disappeared from Europe's vineyards (Bordeaux especially) in the mid-19th century before reappearing among Chile’s Merlot (a grape with which it was confused for a long time) vines a century later. This thick-skinned, deeply coloured, characterful variety needs a long, warm growing season to reach its fullest potential, and so is perfectly matched to the great terroirs of Maipo. Santa Gloria is a leading brand from the award-winning Santa Alicia Winery. David González, an inveterate perfectionist with thirty years' experience, is Santa Alicia's chief winemaker producer. Much of the grapes for this wine are sourced from the Maipo region, which surrounds Chile's capital Santiago. The Central Valley region runs for 400km south of Santiago, where plantings are dominated by the well known "international varieties". Santa Alicia is a past winner of 'Chilean Winery of the Year.'
