Region: Chile, Central Valley
Grape variety: Merlot
Background: Santa Gloria is a leading brand from the award-winning Santa Alicia Winery. David González, an inveterate perfectionist with thirty years' experience, is Santa Alicia's chief winemaker producer. Much of the grapes for this wine are sourced from the Maipo region, which surrounds Chile's capital Santiago. The Central Valley region runs for 400km south of Santiago, where plantings are dominated by the well-known "international varieties".
Tasting notes: Brilliant wee glugger that ticks all the boxes! Dripping with bright damson fruit and a lovely silky mouthfeel, this is what Merlot is all about, but which is often very difficult to find. Especially at this silly price…. Chilean Winery of the year at London Wine Show.
Gorgeous deep colour and a bright, generous nose of forest berries, plum and sweet spice. Medium-weight, soft palate with barely-there tannins and approachable flavours of fruitcake, mint and black olive.
Award: Santa Alicia is a past winner of 'Chilean Winery of the Year.
