Tasting notes: Made from a blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and other red varietals, [yellow tail] Jammy Red Roo is full of fruit aromas and flavours. Aromas of natural forest fruits and strawberries and cream flow over a vanillin undertone. Flavour is sweet and vibrant, with notes of juicy red berries, vanilla and chocolate.

Background: Started by the late Doug Collet in 1973, Woodstock in McLaren Vale has always had an eye on the future. As well as red, white and rose wines, Woodstock has a ken focus on fortified wines too. When his son and current owner, Scott took over in 1982, the tradition has continued with fine wine making from the old vines on the property. Ben Glaetzer is now the chief winemaker with Scott managing vines – a winning team as shown by the Heartland range.
Tasting notes: The colour is deep, dark red with an almost black centre, yet still visible bright, youthful hues on the edges. Satsuma Plums, blueberries, blackberries, beetroot and a hint of rhubarb aromas. Savoury toasted spice characters of anise, cloves and cardamom, seamlessly mingle with mouth-watering hints of fennel, caraway and min on the nose, with just a speckle of pepper. These characters follow through on to the palate, with a fine structured vanilla oak base providing a holding pattern for the flavours to be held up generously. Elegant yet firm tannins from Cabernet Sauvignon provide a sophisticated backbone, whilst fleshy Shiraz enriches the body and blossoms in the mouth, providing warm enriching and powerful flavours. The texture is powerful with great structure and definition in its youth, this full textured wine will evolve over time and reward with more complex flavours.

Yields were up on the monstrously low 2019/2020 seasons, a relief for producers. The oak stands proudly atop this wine, and the fruit is a little reductive upon opening; however, the cool flow of flavour across the tongue is sensational. This is glossy, complete and saturated in red and purple fruits. The 2021 is sitting so pert and frisky at this stage – I’m pretty sure, having just looked at the 2020 (and loved it), that this needs a little time to come together. Drink Date 2024 – 2034”
Robert Parker 2022 Wine Advocate Review Erin Larkin - 96 Points: Glaetzer Anaperenna 2020: “The 2020 Anaperenna Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon pours an iridescent magenta in the glass. On the nose, there are layers of sweet vanilla oak, raspberries at the height of the season, fresh liquorice root, star anise, fresh cut fennel and cracked black peppercorns. In the mouth, the wine is silky, full-bodied and unfurling – the quality of the fruit sourcing shines through as the flavours linger on the finish. There’s a brightness and energy here that I have found in many of the 2020 reds from Barossa (which is interesting, given the continuation of low yields and drought conditions, suggesting perhaps clever, adaptive viticulture at the fore). There’s a friskiness that suggests a decant would be highly advisable. This is a ripper of a wine.”

Bottled in October 2020 and scheduled to be released in October 2021, it features lovely lift and delicate herbal nuances on the nose, plus hints of red and black currants and blackberries. Full-bodied and supple, it’s also crisp, long and velvety on the finish, picking up delicious nuances of vanilla, dark chocolate and bright, fresh fruit. “
James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2021 Edition - 96 Points - Gold – Glaetzer Anaperenna 2018: “82% shiraz (30-100yo vines), 18% cabernet sauvignon (30-130yo vines) yielding 2.5t/ha, open-fermented, hand-plunged, matured for 16 months in new hogsheads (92% French, 8% American). Full-bodied, plum blackberry, supple tannin, good oak. Easy to argue this is too cheap.”

Score: 95/100 - Ray Jordan - Wine Pilot: Good vintage, classy wine. A compelling combination. This excellent blend of cabernet and shiraz from the 2016 vintage is only just, and ever so just, starting to see some initial development. But it is so far from where it will finish. Rich and smooth dark chocolate and dark fruit characters merge seamlessly with the cedary oak and fine chalky tannins. There's a slightly liqueur fruit thing happening there. A great example of what this region can do, amply demonstrating the virtues of blending these two varieties.
Points: 95/100 - Tyson Stelzer: Ben Glaetzer has long championed Shiraz Cabernet blends in the Barossa, and has tactically highlighted Cabernet to take the lead in his Langhorne Creek flagship. Redcurrants pop with crunchy acidity, gently accented with regional menthol, well married with the plush blueberries of Shiraz. Expertly deployed oak brings dark chocolate to the union, fixing an impressively fine, confident tannin frame that confirms both persistence and endurance.

Old Barossan vines are a trademark of the winery, as are Chief Winemaker, Paul Lindner’s minimal intervention techniques.
Tasting notes: Ripe and juicy berries flow onto the palate which is medium bodied, with soft and velvety tannins adding a lovely structure and texture to the wine while sweet and briary spice balances the juicy fruit through to the finish.

Tasting notes: Medium to deep crimson with purple hues. Lifted blue fruits on the nose with hints of raspberry and Satsuma plum joining the mix. Hints of mint and liquorice add to the complexity with cedary oak and savoury notes. Rich and juicy fruit flows through the palate which is medium to full-bodied. The Cabernet Sauvignon shines through with its blackcurrant, blueberries and brambly spice, while the Shiraz fills the palate and softens the tannins on the finish.
Food pairing: Medium-rare Bolar roast with mushrooms, grilled ‘T’ bone steak medium-rare.
